In other Winter sports news, China's skier Xu Mengtao has undergone successful surgery knee on both knees. She aggravated a previous injury following a crash in the final of the freestyle aerial at last month's Games. The 2014 Sochi silver medalist was a gold medal favourite, until taking the spill. This latest procedure leaves question marks, about the 27-year-old's future.
Xu thanked fans for their support after receiving messages on social media. She has now gone under the knife ten times in as many years and now hopes to be on the road to a full recovery in order to be in peak form for the Beijing 2022 Olympics. The Olympian received plenty of support from her teammates, as woman's snowboard half pipe silver medalist Liu Jiayu visited her in hospital. This isn't the first time Xu has crashed while competing. During the Vancouver Games in 2010, she had the highest score after the first jump, before taking a spill which left her in sixth. That crash did not cause any injury.
And from physical pain to mental anguish. South Korean speed skater Kim Bo-reum has checked herself into a mental health treatment centre after facing a huge backlash for her quite visible outrage at teammate Noh Seon-yeong after she fell behind in the women's 500 meter final. More than 600-thousand Koreans signed a petition calling for her and Park Ji-woo, who also displayed aggressive behavior towards Noh, to be expelled from the team. Kim later won the silver in the women's mass start, and was emotional afterwards as she knelt in front of the crowd in what looked like an apology.
