Now that Najib Razak has been charged with corruption and criminal breach of trust, here's a look back at how the One-M-D-B scandal unfolded.
Najib came to power in 2009 and soon after founded state fund One-M-D-B.  Back in 2017, the US Department of Justice alleged that nearly 4.5 billion US dollars were laundered through a complex web of transactions and shell companies. Najib denied any wrongdoing. Yet the scandal plagued his second term in office, eventually leading to the ousting of a coalition that had ruled Malaysia for six decades.  Being defeated in a general election on May 9th, Najib's one-time mentor Mahathir Mohamad came to power and reopened the probe into the alleged scandal. Days later, Najib was hit with a travel ban, as speculation mounted that he was about to flee the country. And on Monday, Malaysian authorities froze hundreds of bank accounts believed to be linked to 1MDB. In a lower court, Najib was charged with three counts of corruption, with each charge having a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
