After the G20 leaders' summit held in Buenos Aires, Chinese president Xi Jinping and Argentine president Mauricio Macri are due to meet today. The Chinese ambassador to Argentina has announced they are due to sign a series of agreements that form part of a five-year plan to develop the relationship between the two countries. Solar energy is one of the important sectors of the agreements. CGTN's Joel Richards reports.
When Xi Jinping landed in Buenos Aires for the G20 leaders' summit in Argentina, there to greet was the governor of the northern province Jujuy, where Chinese investment is set to transform the local energy grid. In this northern part of Argentina at over 4000 meters altitude, this region is where one of the largest solar parks in Latin America is under construction. The Argentine government says is a 400 million dollar investment.
LUO JIACONG CHAIRMAN, SHANGHAI ELECTRIC POWER CONSTRUCTION "This project is in the Jujuy province. It is a mountainous area with plenty of mining resources but no power stations. On the completion of this project, the Jujuy province will no longer buy electricity from other provinces or even from Chile."
JOEL RICHARDS BUENOS AIRES "By law by the year 2025 Argentina must produce 25% of its energy from renewable sources. As well as wind energy in the south, in the north there is vast potential for solar energy."
Production minister Dante Sica says that China will play an important role in Argentina developing its renewable energy sector.
DANTE SICA PRODUCTION MINISTER "When it comes to wind energy we have the most regular winds in the world, and solar energy in the north of the country with high levels of solar radiation, they are sectors that are important when it comes to attracting Chinese investment."
The solar panels at Cacuahri are due to be installed by March of next year. Joel Richards, CGTN.
