A draft law citing the occasions during which the Chinese national anthem could be played or sung was submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for its first reading on Thursday.
The national anthem should not be performed at funerals or other improper events. It should not be used in advertisements either, nor as background music at public places.
According to the draft, those who maliciously modify the lyrics or play or sing the national anthem in a distorted or disrespectful way can be detained for up to 15 days by public security departments.
The "March of the Volunteers" is the national anthem of the People's Republic of China. Its lyrics were composed by poet and playwright Tian Han in 1934 while composer Nie Er added the music the following year.
