While delivering a speech Monday about climate change to about 300 leaders and experts from Pacific Island countries Fiji Prime Minister Voreqe Bainmimarama demanded that the U.S. take responsibility for refugees from effected countries due to their historical ties, according to Xinhua.
U.S. President Trump announced last month plans to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on Climate Exchange while he said that he was open to negotiating for "a better deal".
Mr Bainimarama said Kiribati and Tuvalu people who are under the living threat from climate change will not become refugees and he pledged that Fijian would take them in with their homes and hearts.
The main aim of the meeting is to call on more countries to take part in plans for global climate action.
Situated at sea level, both Kiribati and Tuvalu are threatened with extinction. The rising waters have already engulfed some of the surrounding islands.
