Sex determination racket busted in Guangdong

A couple was arrested in Southern Chinese city of Guangzhou for running a sex determination center.

Gender test has been outlawed in China since long as it may lead to selective abortions based on a child's gender.

However, the ban appears to have failed to deter the rackets providing the "service."

A couple accused of running a gender test center has been arrested on Sunday after New Express Daily exposed them in an investigative report. The accused include a woman named Huang.

They were in "business" for more than three years and had served the families who may have aborted children, after learning that the fetus was a girl, the report said.

The couple conducted the test in a minivan. A therapy coach was attached to the rear of the cabinet segregated by curtains. A compatible device resembling "a large sized laptop" was employed to conduct ultrasound.

They would drive the vehicle near a client's residence, pick her up, and examine on payment of 300 to 500 yuan (44-73 US dollars) in a matter of minutes, an informant told the newspaper.

They appeared to have behaved with great care while developing new clients, a New Express Daily journalist who contacted the test provider observed.

"The service is only provided to the customers brought to us by an acquaintance," Huang told the reporter and thoroughly checked his identity before confirming and appointment.

Local police were reported on the illegal activity who raided the facility during a consultation process. A notebook containing 40 telephone numbers and addresses of clients was found inside the vehicle, the report said.

It is still a common belief in China that only boys carry on a family's bloodline and glory, that may be a cause for an increasingly male population in China.

It is illegal for doctors to reveal the sex of unborn children. However the practice goes on, especially in private hospitals, the report said.
