The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the magnitude as 6.7, while China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported it was a 6.8-magnitude quake, with the epicenter monitored at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Electricity went off in Bodrum, while large waves were observed in the sea causing flash flooding in the streets, reported Turkish NTV. The quake could cause a small tsunami in the area, European quake agency EMSC earlier warned on Twitter.
Local government officials have urged residents not to stay indoors.
