Chinese businessman is breaking language and cultural barriers by setting up a business in Nigeria. 6 years ago, Xu Min ventured to the West African country with no clue of the language and cultural preferences. But now he has set up a restaurant and trained Nigerians to cook Chinese food. CGTN's Kelechi Emekalam tells us how he did it.
Firing up a Chinese cuisine in Hong Xin restaurant in Nigeria's capital Abuja. The restaurant belongs to this man-Xu Min. A Chinese businessman who has been shuttling in and out of Nigeria since 2012 - trading in a wide range of Chinese products. But he recently obtained a residency permit to live and work in Nigeria. He doesn't speak fluent English yet. He uses a mobile phone app and daily interactions to learn enough and train his Nigerian employees to cook Chinese food. And that leaves him to deal with cultural differences to move his business forward.
XU MIN HONG XIN RESTAURANT OWNER "My employees had some bad habits at the beginning. I am correcting them gradually. Same as my Chinese chef, I will advise them how to do things faster, working is working, You cannot work and chat at the same time."
KELECHI EMEKALAM ABUJA, NIGERIA "Nigeria is regarded as one of the most favourable places for Chinese businesses. Some estimate as much as 80% Nigerians positively view Chinese businesses in their country and that explains why a businessman like Xu Min despite the cultural differences is able to run a stable business here."
From the front desk to the kitchen, Mr. Xu Min pays close attention to ensure everything is done right. His Nigerian employees call him a tough boss but inspiring too.
EMANUEL ENEDI, MANAGER HONG XIN RESTAURANT "I know he is a very tough and sometimes good person, sometimes you are tough and sometimes---you know restaurant is a very good business and even me I would like to become a boss of my own someday, so I think I am learning from him so someday, I will be like him"
Hong Xin restaurant is among a handful Chinese restaurants that are increasingly becoming popular here. The food is different from local cuisines so many who want to taste something different come here for a meal. Kelechi Emekalam. CGTN, Abuja, Nigeria.
