2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics: Nigerian team gets huge welcome to Lagos despite no medals

They may NOT have made it to the podium, but they remain heroes back home. The Nigerian bobsled team has been welcomed back to Lagos fresh from the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. The trio was enthusiastically greeted at the airport. Here's CGTN's Deji Badmus with that story.
Waiting for the arrival of the history-making Nigerian Bobsled team.
The Ice Blazers, as the team is known here, may not have won any medal at the winter Olympics but they have won the hearts and minds of millions in Nigeria and across the world.
Everyone here is waiting to not just catch a glimpse of the girls but to celebrate their achievement. And that's exactly what happened when they emerged from the arrival terminal of the airport.
The girls danced their hearts out with the crowd.
SEUN ADIGUN TEAM CAPTAIN, NIGERIA BOBSLEIGH TEAM "It was absolutely beautiful to know that people rallied all over the world, Nigerians, non-Nigerians, everybody came together to represent us very nicely. And everyone was proud of the ability to make history and be innovative. One thing we can definitely say is that we have a starting point. We have to start from somewhere. Just like in life, you can't go from o to 100 just like that. You have to go somewhere in between. So we are very blessed that that margin was just there because what people don't also see is that we improved seven seconds from the first day we go on ice there to the day that we raced. So it's all one day at a time. So as long you can get better every day, I think that you can take something away from that."
AKUOMA OMEOGA BRAKESMAN, NIGERIA BOBSLED TEAM "The experience was extremely overwhelming, to say the least. But at the same time, we had a lot of support. Our families came out to support us like they have always had. A lot of people from Nigerian came out support us. We had our federation. We were almost the only team that had the actual Ambassador in Korea come to visit us. So that was extremely welcoming to see that we are received all over the world. Even in Korea, the Korea people loved us as well, so that just goes to show the impact."
NGOZI ONWUMERE BRAKESMAN, NIGERIA BOBSLED TEAM "I think the experience was amazing. Everybody was excited to see Nigeria represented. Everybody was excited, regardless of the outcome for us to just be included in something. So I think that's a start of something amazing for the future. I think we are fairly new so we did have a lot to have expectation for. But I think moving forward, we know what to expect and so we are only going to get better from here. Being able to compete to compete with the best in the world, I think that puts us in line to be the best in the world. You first have to see it to be able to do it. We didn't have ice to train so I think that's very visible here that we can do it. And I think we would have a larger contingency moving forward."
The story of the trio is quite inspiring and a clear of demonstration of how far one can go with determination and dedication. They went into Bobsled just some two years ago and started by sliding on a wooden sled.
Today, not only have they made history as the very first Nigerian and African Bobsled team, they have succeeded in drawing attention to sports that was hardly spoken about on the African continent. DB,CGTN,L,N.
