South Africa Art: Mozambican-born artist uses recycled magazines on glossy works
Updated 19:04, 31-Jul-2019
Mozambican-born artist Dario Manjate is currently living in South Africa and indulges art lovers in what he calls collage art. He makes his work from recycled magazines, because he says the glossy look and feel of the paper, along with the message the magazines carry, reflects the overall theme of his art. CGTN's Yolisa Njamela has more.
Dario Manjate uses old magazines to create collage. Collage is a certain technique that is utilized using recycled objects to create a piece of art.
DARIO MANJATE ARTIST "Well, if you can check properly the people who made the magazines they did not intend to have those pieces as a work of art. They wanted to sell their magazines. So what I do, I select randomly the pieces that you see because today we are bombarded with consumerism and also the need for recycling."
Most of the portraits that line the walls of his place portray women in different moods and lights, This shows that women do indeed play a great role in his work. Manjate says this is because he is inspired by his grandmother who raised him.
DARIO MANJATE ARTIST "I learnt a lot from her, to be honest, and this is the reason why you can say I prefer to choose queens; I call them queens to create some sort of empowerment of woman as well."
His work is sought-after for its extraordinary qualities.
YOLISA NJAMELA JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA "Dario is proof that indeed one man's trash is another man's treasure. He repurposes discarded magazines to create his fascinating work."
DARIO MANJATE ARTIST "Yes, I believe in that. One man's junk is another man's treasure, because, I mean, as you can see from these magazines they were supposed to be dumped somewhere and I had to make use of them."
Dario Manjate has participated in various community projects such as, "Work To Win." An environmental awareness project which included several art murals created to up-lift his surrounding township community. These particular pieces focused on a topic very close to the artist's heart. They created awareness around the dangers of pollution and global warming. So, as a passionate environmental custodian myself, in this case, I decided to help Dario, with spectacular results of course. Well, if I may say so myself.
