El Salvador has become the latest country to establish bilateral relations with China. In the process, El Salvador has severed so-called diplomatic ties with Taiwan. This leaves Taiwan with only 17 allies around the world. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi and his Salvadoran counterpart signed a communique in Beijing today. CGTN's Zhao Yunfei has more.

WANG YI CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER "History will prove that establishing diplomatic relations with China is in full accordance with the fundamental and long-term interests of the country. Today's development is also in the best interests of the people of El Salvador."
The two countries have agreed to deepen mutual trust, utilize complementary advantages, and cooperate in various fields.
