China’s Xu Jiayu beat 2016 Olympic champion Ryan Murphy to win the men's 100 meters backstroke gold at the 17th FINA World Championships in Budapest on Tuesday.
Xu, who also posted the fastest time in the preliminaries, won gold with a final time of 52.44 seconds.
He is the national record holder in backstroke races across all distances, and won a silver medal in the 100 meters backstroke at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
