Taiwan's leader should clearly know the nature of cross-Strait relations and reaffirm the core understanding that both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office said on Tuesday.
"We have reiterated our attitudes on cross-Strait relations regarding propositions made by the island's authority, and the key to cross-Strait relations is that Taiwan and the mainland belong to one China," Ma said when responding to a speech made by the island region's leader Tsai Ing-wen on October 10, in which she mentioned cross-Strait relations.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the opening of people-to-people communications between the mainland and Taiwan.
The results achieved in cross-Strait exchanges have not been easy over the past 30 years, Ma said, adding that the most important lesson from those 30 years is the fundamental role of the one-China principle.
He said that, only by upholding the one-China principle and opposing "Taiwan independence," can both sides enjoy peace, stability and development in cross-Strait relations, as well as promote communication and cooperation.
