Li: Development is the foundation of Macao

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has met Chui Sai On, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), in Beijing.

Li told Chui, who is in the capital to report to the central government on his work, that the achievements made by Macao in the last year were appreciated.

"Macao has achieved the social harmony and stability of the people's livelihood with economy development and public administration reform," the premier said.

He said that the central government will continue to adhere to the "one country, two systems" policy, handling things in strict conformity with the basic law of Macao.

"Development is the eternal topic, also is the foundation of Macao, helping to improve the livelihood of the people," Li said.

He called on Chui and the Macao SAR government to seize the opportunity and advance Macao's participation in the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as promoting the development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.

He also called on Macao to strengthen cooperation with the Chinese mainland and make new headway as a service platform for business and trade cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, accelerating the development of Macao to be a world tourism and leisure center.

"Macao should keep improving the construction on housing, transportation, medical, infrastructure construction, education and other fields," Li added.

Chui thanked the central government's for its support, saying the Macao SAR government will continue to promote economic development and diversification and closely link up with the country's national strategies.
