Israel carried out major air raids in Syria on Saturday, including against what it described as Iranian targets. The raids came after an Israeli F16 fighter was shot down in Syria.
The White House and the State Department issued statements that Israel is one of the United States staunchest allies.The statements say the US supports Israel's right to defend itself from the Iranian-backed Syrian and militia forces in southern Syria. The US called on Iran and its allies to cease provocative actions and work toward regional peace.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke by phone about the airstrikes in Syria. Putin urged all sides to refrain from any move that could lead to a new confrontation in the region.
