Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday expressed his trust in the ability of Hong Kong's new chief executive, Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, to lead the Asian financial hub to score new achievements.
In their meeting shortly after Carrie Lam was sworn in, President Xi said "great responsibilities and a glorious mission" had fallen on her shoulders.
Xi urged Lam to solemnly implement the "One Country, Two Systems" principle, and preserve the authority of the HKSAR Basic Law, which is based on the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary of the city.
After the meeting, Lam accompanied Xi to meet Hong Kong's key figures of the executive, legislative, and judicial bodies.
President Xi encouraged the leaders to properly deal with the relationship between executive and legislative bodies in order to ensure smooth and effective governance.
