China's "open door policy" has made it a major player in international trade. Decades of relentless growth and liberalization have helped the country to increase its trade links all around the world. One of the beneficiaries of this globalization has been Shenzhen, China's first Special Economic Zone. Previously known as the factory of the world, it is now more an incubator for innovation. CGTN's Han Bin went along to check on the city's progress.
"Shenzhen offers everything that anyone can find in this city."
"I think that's a lot of potential for the city."
"Shenzhen is quite fascinating in this way that it has all of the realities that seem to be contradictory to each other, but in fact they work quite well together."
"Shenzhen is the incubator for new industries."
"This working relationship is not planned."
"You could tell from the change everyday."
"I love every moment."
"What's behind Shenzhen's miracle? Can its experience be duplicated?"
PROFESSOR DU JUAN DEPT. OF ARCHITECTURE, HONG KONG UNIVERSITY "Well, a lot has been said about the miracles of Shenzhen, from economic sense and political sense. Something I like to emphasise that people don't really discuss enough, is the human psychology, is that Shenzhen in the 1980s and China offered a complete liberation of mind, and people were told to do whatever they want to make money, do whatever create the life for yourselves. So that's the tremendous change, from everywhere else in China."
BILL LIU, CHAIRMAN & CEO ROYOLE CORPORATION "So when I came to the city in 2010, I found this is really a unique place. The spirit here is great for startups. If you have some creative ideas, you can quickly turn ideas to products."
PROFESSOR DU JUAN DEPT. OF ARCHITECTURE, HONG KONG UNIVERSITY "The challenge is how can Shenzhen, now having achieved a success, to still have the courage to continue to re-invent, to break the rules, and to not be afraid to challenge existing standards. Shenzhen was really in the position to re-invent new ways. I think that's the way for Shenzhen to go forward. I hope it continues this."
