More than 10-million students in China have been taking the country's annual National College Entrance Exam - that's the most since 2010. For students, the stakes are high. Our reporter Li Jianhua spoke with teens about how it went.
LI JIANHUA GUANGZHOU "This is the second, and also the last day of the College Entrance Exam which is considered the most important exam in China because it's gonna decide which university you'll be enrolled in, or probably your job in the future. In case some of our viewers didn't know what the college entrance exam is, it' s comprised of four tests altogether. The first one is Chinese; the second is mathematics; the third one is science or arts, depending on if you are a science student or an arts student. And the last one – last but not least – it's English. I talked to some of the parents and students to find out how they felt about the exam this year."
"I think the exam should be the first 'pass' and the first attempt. When they pass the first major task, it would be beneficial for their lives in society."
"We're not very nervous. They have prepared whatever they had to. They had done enough exercises, so I didn't force my kid to do anything extra. Just calm down and do the best."
"It should be the chemistry part. It was not the way we practiced, and it was just beyond our control."
"It went pretty well, but Math was totally out of control because I kind of not prepare that well. Since everybody thought it was hard, so I think it's fine."
The feelings towards the entrance exam could be divided. Some students thought it was easy, but some thought it was really difficult, especially mathematics this year. Some of them are happy. I'm pretty sure they're gonna enjoy a party or probably travel around China because what's waiting for them is a two-month long holiday. And of course, some students that failed the exam – or unsatisfied with their performance. Either they can redo the last year of their senior high school class, or they probably could study abroad in the US, or in the UK. That really depends. The college entrance exam happens every year in China and everything will be revolved around the college exam in those few days.
