Uganda has confirmed that 12 of its soldiers were killed in Sunday's al-Shabaab ambush in Somalia. Ugandan soldiers have been part of the AU peacekeeping mission in the country since 2007.
Uganda's army says it fought back hard in the skirmish, inflicting much more serious casualties on its attackers. Al-Shabaab claims to have killed 39 Ugandan soldiers.
The troops were on regular patrol at their base in Gorowe, southwest of the capital Mogadishu when the al-Shabaab insurgents attacked. Seven injured Ugandan soldiers have been evacuated to a hospital in Mogadishu.
