In Italy, the head of the anti-immigration "League" -- a member of the four-party, centre-right grouping which looks set to claim the most votes in Sunday's general election -- said it would be able to govern and that markets had no reason to fear. He added "the euro was, is and remains a mistake", but conceded that holding a referendum over Italy's continued participation in the single currency was "unthinkable". The country's Democratic Party leader Matteo Renzi has decided to step down after the center-right grouping won about 37 percent of the parliamentary vote.
