Death toll rises to 51 following Peru bus crash

The death toll has climbed to 51 after a bus plunged off a cliff following a collision with a truck in Peru, authorities said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Tuesday on a sharply curving highway in Pasamayo known as Curva del Diablo – the Devil's Bend – which is north of the capital, Lima.

The bus, with 55 passengers and two crew on board, was on its way from Huacho, 130 kilometers (81 miles) north of the capital, to Lima.

A police helicopter and a navy patrol boat were dispatched to help in the rescue operation.
The cause of the incident is under investigation. Road accidents are common in Peru. Official figures show that there were more than 3,800 accidents in 2016, in which 493 people were killed.
