A team of Turkish police investigators and prosecutors have left the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. They conducted an unprecedented eight-hour night-time search, looking into the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Unconfirmed reports are emerging that Saudi Arabia will admit that journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed in its Consulate in Istanbul. CGTN's Guy Henderson reports on a day of drama in Turkey.
It was what Turkish authorities had been pushing for, but didn't dare force. Saudi investigators entered the Consulate first, relatively low-key. Then as evening fell, the Turkish side turned up making their presence felt in no uncertain terms.
GUY HENDERSON ISTANBUL "It's taken Turkish investigators 2 weeks to gain access to this building. Now they're here they are pushing back journalists and appear to be setting up a crime scene."
Then came a convoy of vehicles, inside, teams of specialists, including forensics.
They'd already apportioned blame. But with Riyadh's continued and forceful denials, clearly, they wanted to leave no stone unturned. Washington wouldn't take anyone's word for it, so U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo headed to Riyadh, Turkey may be his next stop.
Outside the White House, President Donald Trump said he'd spoken to the Saudi King, who'd again insisted neither he nor his son the Crown Prince had anything to do with Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance. But the president didn't rule out Saudi involvement.
DONALD TRUMP US PRESIDENT "He didn't really know, maybe, I don't want to get into his mind, but it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers, who knows? We're going to try to get to the bottom of it very soon. But his was a flat denial."
Which made what happened next all the more surprising, unconfirmed reports late on Monday night that Riyadh was about to admit Khashoggi was killed inside this building. In an attempted abduction gone wrong.
If that is confirmed, it would be the most dramatic of twists. But for now, the hard evidence still ends with this blurry image. GH, CGTN, Istanbul.
