The China-Africa Cooperation forum will bring together hundreds of high-level officials from China and the entire African continent. CGTN has spoken with the president from Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who talked about a strengthening friendship with China.
Q1: Mr. President, this year marks the 48th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Equatorial Guinea. How do you see their bilateral relations so far?
A: The friendship and cooperation between China and Equatorial Guinea is historical and traditional. And our friendship is getting stronger. China - as our main cooperative partner - provided a lot of political and economic assistance to our country. That includes large amounts of financial aid.
Q2: What's the foundation of the friendship between our two countries?
A: (Our friendship) is based on mutual respect. China does not interfere in our domestic affairs. And we treat each other with sincerity. We value this sincere friendship.
Q3: We've noticed that Chinese enterprises are widely involved in local infrastructure building. What's your view on the Chinese enterprises here?
A: The development of Equatorial Guinea is inseparable from the help of Chinese enterprises. They've helped with many infrastructure projects, such as residence buildings, government offices, and roads. They also have a presence in medical care and telecommunications.
Q4: Could you shed some light on the Bata project? I've heard that a Chinese company is involved in building the port.
A: Bata is an important port in Central Africa. It can accommodate many vessels and supply goods. The goods are not only headed to domestic destinations but also to other Central African countries and Chad.
Q5: As China's old friend, you've visited the country nine times. How should we further deepen the friendship between the two countries?
A: Well, people like to visit where they are most welcomed. I visited China nine times at the gracious invitation of the Chinese government. Our reciprocal visits have strengthened the ties between our peoples. We also send professionals to learn new technologies in China. Actually, most of our technical personnel have had the chance to study in China. And I think Chinese culture is also widely accepted in our country.
Q6: What do you expect for the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, which is scheduled for September?
A: I expect something great not only for our country but also for the whole Africa. China has favorable policies for cooperation with Africa. Africa will better develop with China's economic assistance.
