Typhoon Nesat brought heavy rains and strong winds to Pingtan Island when it made landfall in Fuqing in eastern China's Fujian Province, on Sunday morning.
Nesat, the ninth typhoon of the year, packing maximum winds of up to 33 meters per second, landed at the county-level coastal city of Fuqing at around 6:00 a.m. local time, according to meteorological authorities.
Pingtan Island is some 20 kilometers away from the site of the typhoon's landfall. Rainfall on the island exceeded 100 millimeters in the first 11 hours and caused blackouts to more than 20,000 households on the island.
The typhoon also caused blackouts to another 30,000 households in Fuqing, but half of them had power restored by 11:00 a.m. local time.
