Climate-related disasters have also become more of a common occurrence in North America. Sean Callebs gives us some more background.
You are looking at one of more than a dozen huge wildfires, that have been burning out of control in California, and parts of Nevada. The prolonged heat and whipping winds are creating a hazy, desperate situation. Officials would like to believe that blazes like this are a rarity, but can't make that claim anymore with such unpredictable global weather conditions.
JONATHAN COX CALFIRE "This is that new normal, that unpredictability. The large, explosive growth fires."
In eastern Canada, an unrelenting sun is broiling Montreal, an area not accustomed to a prolonged heat wave. According to officials, at least 70 people in the Province of Quebec died due to extreme weather. Some researchers argue dramatic warming above the Arctic Circle is fueling a changing weather pattern. Look at what is happening in the central Mexican state of Jalisco. What you hear are concert-goers fighting for protection from massive hailstones that rained down from above. About 40 people were hurt, and dozens of homes were damaged. And, if experts are right, and climate change is creating a new weather norm, the question becomes what can people expect next. Sean Callebs, CGTN, Washington.
