So the par 3 event is the appetizer, with the main course being the actual tournament. And plenty of fans hope that Tiger Woods feasts on Augusta National, as he has in previous years, claiming four green jackets. For the first time in many years, Eldrick is back and healthy, and his presence can be felt all around the course. Our Jonas Gilbart has that story from the Masters.
It looks and feels like final round Sunday. But nope this is just a practice round. But this is Tiger Woods and he is back at Augusta National and perhaps, his back is finally back, as well. Now less than a year removed from major spinal surgery. Woods feels like he's been touched by a higher power.
TIGER WOODS FOUR-TIME MASTERS CHAMPION "Well, it's been a tough road. I've described a little bit of it, the pain of just sitting there and the amount of times that I've fallen because my leg didn't work, or I just had to lay on the ground for extended periods of times. Those are some really dark, dark times. The reason why I say I'm a walking miracle is that I don't know if, I don't know if anyone who has had a lower back fusion that can swing the club as fast as I can swing it. That's incredible."
Now pain-free and in control, Woods may be poised to once again take the patrons on a thrill ride this week, something they got a taste of when Tiger and Phil teamed up for a practice round. The old rivals, now elder statesmen of the game and closer than ever.
PHIL MICKELSON THREE-TIME MASTERS CHAMPION "I think that nobody respects and appreciates what he's done for the game more, because nobody's benefited from what he's done for the game of golf more than I have. I've always had that appreciation and respect for him. To see him back out playing is incredible."
For the new guard on tour, the return of Tiger means a completely different feeling to this event as his presence, quite simply, changes everything.
DUSTIN JOHNSON WORLD NO. 1 "Yeah, I mean he still brings that, I don't know what you want to call it, but yeah, he still brings that to the game, and he's got a little bit of an intimidation factor still."
JON RAHM WORLD NO. 3 "It's great to have him get better. I mean, I haven't seen the reaction I saw by the crowds yesterday on the range to any other player. As soon as Tiger walked in everybody stood up and started clapping. It doesn't happen for anybody else. It's when someone like Tiger's back in the game, and is back at Augusta, it's special."
Golf fans could be forgiven if they don't completely buy into yet another Tiger return but the man says, this time it's completely different from those failed attempts of the past.
TIGER WOODS 14-TIME MAJOR WINNER "In hindsight it was a big pipe dream. My back was fried. To be able to, I was trying, whether it was cortisone shots, epidurals, anything to take away the pain so maybe I might be able to withstand a week. Nothing worked. My disk was gone. So given how I feel now versus then, I mean, it's just night and day."
JONAS GILBART AUGUSTA NATIONAL "Well, it sounds weird to even say it, but it's been a decade since Tiger Woods last won a Major that being the 2008 US Open which was the 14th of his career. Tiger also comes into his Masters return outside the top-100 in the World Rankings but despite all this, he is still the co-odds on favourite to win this week alongside 2015 champ Jordan Spieth. The Tiger effect is indeed back in full swing."
