The Foreign Ministry says China will continue to support the cause of international human rights.
GENG SHUANG CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON "China regrets the decision of the U.S. The Human Rights Council was set up with the authorization of the UN General Assembly, and is an important platform for all sides to open dialogue and communication, and enhance cooperation on improving the human rights situation. China always advocates and has committed to multilateralism and supports the work of the council, and protects the human rights worldwide. China will continue to cooperate with all parties to contribute to the cause of international human rights through constructive dialogue."
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed regret. He said he prefers for the United States to remain part of the Human Rights Council. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson called the move "regrettable" and said the UK's support for the council remains steadfast.Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop also expressed disappointment over the US's decision.
