The Basque separatist group ETA formally announced its dissolution on Thursday, marking an end to western Europe's last armed insurgency. The group was blamed for hundreds of deaths and kidnappings in northern Spain and southwest France over the course of five decades. In what it said was its final statement, ETA announced it had dismantled all its structures and ended all political activity.
Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupted on Thursday, releasing lava into a neighbourhood, home to around 1,500 people. Authorities have been warning residents to prepare to evacuate for a week. The eruption comes after days of earthquakes rattled the area's Puna district.
The Swedish Academy says it has postponed this year's Nobel Prize for Literature because of a scandal over an alleged sexual assault involving the husband of one of its members. A string of board members have resigned. The Academy plans to award two prizes next year.
