China welcomes the meeting between Kim Jong Un, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and U.S. President Donald Trump in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Sunday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Geng Shuang, a ministry spokesperson, made the remarks at a regular press conference after the two leaders made a historic handshake and held an unexpected, nearly one-hour talk in the DMZ.

The two leaders agreed to "resume and push forward productive dialogues for making a new breakthrough in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

China supports the resumption of DPRK-U.S. dialogues, said Geng, calling on the relative parties to seize the opportunity and meet each other half way.
