China's foreign ministry on Tuesday condemned comments from the U.S., UK and the European Union on the violent acts of protesters storming the Legislative Council (LegCo) Complex in the HKSAR as a "double standard," slamming the comments as "hypocritical and ugly."

"In the face of violent acts, those comments did not condemn such move but instead, gesticulated at it, that's extremely hypocritical and ugly," ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at Tuesday's daily briefing.

On Monday, groups of protesters used a roll cage trolley as a ram and iron poles to shatter the glass doors of the HKSAR LegCo building, which was later criticized by Hong Kong chief Carrie Lam as "the extreme use of violence and vandalism."

"It's a serious violation of the legal system and an act of endangering social order," Geng said. "We strongly condemn it and support the HKSAR government and the police [in] handling it according to law."

The ministry once again urged other countries to respect China's internal affairs, including the Hong Kong issue.

"We hope relevant countries act cautiously. Do not interfere with China's internal affairs in any form, do not support any illegal, violent acts, do not send wrong signals, and do not make any wrong moves," Geng said.
