The Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party is due to announce its nominee for 2020 Taiwan leadership election, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan meets U.S. President Donald Trump in the U.S., and Russia and U.S. hold nuclear talks.

Winner of KMT's primary to be announced

The KMT party has started its week-long primary polls for next year's Taiwan leadership election.

The five candidates competing for KMT's nomination are Eric Chu, former mayor of New Taipei City, Chou Hsi-wei, former magistrate of Taipei County, Chang Ya-chung, president of Sun Yat-sen School, Terry Gou, Foxconn founder and chairman, and Han Kuo-yu, mayor of Kaohsiung.

However, the race is widely seen as a battle between Han and Gou. The winner of the party’s primary will be announced on Monday, and the KMT will officially nominate its candidate on July 28.

Pakistan's PM Imran Khan visits U.S.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is scheduled to visit the U.S. on July 20, where he will have face-to-face talks with U.S. President Donald Trump for the first time on July 22.

Trump and Khan will discuss a range of issues, including counter-terrorism, defense, energy and trade, with the goal of creating the conditions for a peaceful South Asia and an enduring partnership between the two countries, according to a White House statement.

Relations between Washington and Islamabad have been bumpy during Trump's tenure. Washington depends on Pakistan to supply its forces in neighboring Afghanistan, but ties are strained by allegations that Pakistan offers safe havens to the Afghan Taliban, which Islamabad denies.

Russia, U.S. hold nuclear talks

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and U.S. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Andrea Thompson will hold “full format talks” in Geneva on Wednesday and Thursday on nuclear weaponry. The principal topic of discussion is the New START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty).

"[We would like to discuss] whether there are common points in the sphere of arms control. Of course, the issue of prolonging the START Treaty is thorny," Ryabkov told the media on July 5.

"Dialogue is established, contacts are held, but, firstly, there is no confidence that it will be carried out if not permanently, than regularly at least. Secondly, [there is no confidence] that we will be able to reverse the trend toward derailing the system of agreements in this sphere, which is obvious and is alarming to us," Ryabkov added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 3 signed a bill into law suspending the country's participation in the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with the United States. Moscow and Washington have accused each other of violating the agreement in recent years amid increasing tensions.
