China larch is endemic to the Mount Taibai, the main peak of the Qinling Mountains, northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
Qingling mountains, a major east-west mountain range, provide a natural boundary between north and south China and support a huge variety of wildlife.

Being the only larch species in the Qinling Mountains, China larch usually grows at an altitude of 2,000-3,500 meters, with a height up to 25 meters.
It has an important ecological function in the high mountain area of Mount Taibai.
Its significance is reflected not only in its ability to preserve water and soil but also in preserving the diversity of plants thriving at high altitude.
Plants growing under the canopy of China larch are mostly endangered species, such us the Oneflower kingdonia.

They are sensitive to climate changes, which makes them a perfect species to study the regional climate of the Qinling Mountains.
Living in a harsh environment and having a weak ability to reproduce, China larch is categorized under the second-class state protection in the country.
It is important to protect it to sustain biodiversity.
