Southern China's Guangdong Province usually has long summers, accompanied by high temperature and humidity. This climate enables numerous floras from tropical areas to thrive. And among them is a flame-like flower from the flamboyant tree that could set the cities "ablaze" for months.

The Chinese name of flamboyant tree is "the tree of Phoenix", because its fern-like leaves and red flowers look like the feather and crest of the Phoenix in Chinese legends. It is known as one of the most colorful trees in the world.

The flamboyant tree is native to Madagascar, and was introduced to other tropical and subtropical areas as an ornamental tree. True to its original habitat, this tree is hardy in hot and humid weather, enabling it to thrive in southern China.

From May to August, Guangdong residents can see the flamboyant trees in full bloom. This tree is widely cultivated as it not only provides beautiful scenery but also acts as a broad shade in summer.

Shenzhen people's love for the flamboyant tree is as warm as the flower’s color. During the blooming season of the flamboyant tree, numerous families will gather and enjoy the flower together.

Residents have even appealed to honor it as the "Flower of City"(even though the official flower is the great bougainvillea,) as they argue that this flower is a symbol of the spirit of Shenzhen: Pioneering like the brightest and reddest flame.

In response, the Shenzhen government has set May 20 as "The Flamboyant Flower's Day," and holds a series of activities related to it.
