Following the military parade, a mass civilian parade was held at Beijing's Tian'anmen Square, during National Day celebrations, marking the major achievements since the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949.

The mass parade began with a formation of 1,949 people holding a huge national flag, followed by 2,019 people carrying a huge national emblem.

Around 100,000 citizens and 70 floats join the parade in 36 formations, highlighting the founding of the PRC, China's reform and opening-up and its great rejuvenation.

Here are the highlights:

Tribute to all of those that contributed to the PRC

China's National Day mass parade, on Tuesday, paid tribute to the people who contributed to the building and development of the PRC.

A total of 21 vehicles went past Tian'anmen Square, carrying representatives of relatives of former Party, national and military leaders, contributors to the country and some of their relatives. Veterans who participated in the revolution before the founding of the PRC and other national heroes also joined the celebration.

Historical process marched through Tian'anmen

Five formations marched through Tian'anmen Square representing different historical phases.

Under the leadership of Mao Zedong, the Chinese people won two important wars, the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945) and the War of Liberation (1946-1949), and witnessed the establishment of the New China in 1949.

In the early years after the founding of the country, the Chinese people endeavored to build the nation. Facing poverty, they contributed to the socialist construction, and established basic socialist and political systems under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.

At the early stage of the PRC's founding, China was still an impoverished country. Today, however, it has become the world's second largest economy tanks to decades of unremitting efforts.

Still, China has ranked first in terms of contribution to global economic growth since 2006, according to a report released by the National Bureau of Statistics. In 2018, China's contribution to global economic growth stood at 27.5 percent.

National Day mass parade salutes China's reform and opening-up

Nine formations taking part in a mass parade marking the 70th anniversary of the PRC on Tuesday saluted China's reform and opening-up.

These formations were the second part of the National Day mass parade, and they honored the great development and progress China has made since 1978, under the leadership of the CPC and through the hard work and courage of the Chinese people.

CPC thoughts enriched from generation to generation

Tributes were paid to Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, and Hu Jintao, the former CPC leaders during the reform and opening-up era.

Deng was most renowned for being the mastermind behind the policy of reform and opening-up, which saved China and ushered in an era of amazing economic development that earned worldwide respect.

Two formations reflected rural reform and the establishment of special economic zones, which were all products of Deng's wisdom.

There were also formations marking the important "Three Represents" proposed by Jiang, which requires the CPC to always represent the development requirements of China's advanced social productive forces, the progressive course of China's advanced culture and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the Chinese people.

The mass parade also highlighted Hu's "Scientific Outlook on Development", which unveiled the CPC's determination to promote more coordinated development on the basis of social harmony, environmental protection, and energy conservation in addition to economic expansion.
