The Pentagon released video and photos on Wednesday of the U.S. special forces raid in which ISIL's leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed.

President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died during an overnight raid carried out by the U.S. military in northwest Syria.

The aerial video showed U.S. special operations forces closing in on the compound and U.S. aircraft firing on militants nearby.

The compound was razed by U.S. munitions after the raid, leaving it looking like "a parking lot with large potholes," said Marine Corps General Kenneth McKenzie, commander of U.S. Central Command.

McKenzie also revealed the details of the raid, saying that two children were killed when Baghdadi blew himself up with a suicide vest in a tunnel as he tried to escape U.S. troops.

"I think you'd find (he was using) probably a messenger system that allows you to put something on a floppy or on a bit of electronics and have someone physically move it somewhere," he said.

He portrayed Baghdadi as isolated at his Syrian compound, just four miles from the Turkish border, saying fighters from other militant groups nearby probably did not even know he was there. McKenzie suggested it was unlikely that Baghdadi used the Internet or had digital connections to the outside world.

He also warned the militant group may attempt to stage a "retribution attack."

"We suspect they will try some form of retribution attack. And we are postured and prepared for that," he said.

When describing Baghdadi's last moment, McKenzie said that the ISIL leader crawled into a hole with two small children and blew himself up as his people stayed on the ground.

"So you can deduce what kind of person he is based on that activity... I'm not able to confirm anything else about his last seconds. I just can't confirm that one way or another," he noted.

Sr. counterterrorism chief: ISIL may announce new leader soon

On Wednesday, Acting Director of the National Counterterrorism Center Russell Travers called the death of Baghdadi a "significant" loss but added that the terror group has a "deep bench."

"We need to remember that the United States and the coalition overall has had tremendous success in eliminating leadership over the years of both al Qaeda and ISIS (ISIL), and yet the bench tends to rise to the top. And my guess is that if history is any judge, over the next – somewhere between a couple of days and a couple of weeks – we'll see a new leader khalif announced," Travers said at a House Homeland Security Committee hearing.
