Twenty-five years in the music arena, and four studio recordings: Ding Wei is not the kind who seeks the spotlight every day. She takes time to make sure her music is genuine and original.

Every now and then, she stages concerts to connect with her fans. And, she's just concluded her seven-city livehouse tour in Beijing over the weekend.

From her 2018 album "Untied" favorites like "Souvenir" and "Hypnagogia" to her earlier hits such as "Dear" and "Goodbye, I Love You," Ding Wei treated her loyal fans to a great night.

It is her second national tour ever, and the first was only last year. It seems that she's found her place in the more intimate environment to sing and to communicate.

"There were very few live performance venues between 1994 and 2004 and I got bored of singing on evening galas, which means I just stand there and sing karaoke. In 2015 I performed twice in livehouses and I realized that even though those venues were not very big or elaborately decorated, they were the places that I could sing with a real band and interact with the audiences at best," Ding Wei said.

Ding first showed her talent in 1994, with the epoch-making album "Campus Folk 1" with a single named "Office Workers." She then made three albums between 1995 and 2004. She wrote most of the songs, and the lyrics as well.

Ding then took a long hiatus from the composing-recording-album releasing cycle and turned to compose music for films and TV dramas.

In 2018, she came back with "Untied," still a combination of classical, R&B, electronic and hip-hop. The album won seven nominations at the second China Music Industry Committee Music Awards... and won Best Producing.

"My devotion to music is special because I started the study of music when I was little. Music is divine and is high above human beings. We are not creating anything. We just get some inspiration by chance and make it complete," she said.

Coming back to the limelight, Ding Wei retains her deliberation and persistence, a seemingly rarer and rarer quality in a fast-paced era.

After the tour, she will continue working on a new album.
