Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Brazil on Wednesday, saying he is willing to maintain close communication with Modi to guide a better and more stable development of China-India relations.

The two leaders are in Brazil's capital city Brasilia to attend the 11th BRICS summit.

In their talks, President Xi spoke highly of his informal meeting with Modi last month in India's Chennai, saying that they made in-depth exchanges of views on the global and regional situation as well as major issues of bilateral ties.

The two sides are implementing their consensus reached during the Chennai meeting to extend and expand its positive effects, Xi said.

Talking about the 2nd China International Import Expo (CIIE) just concluded in Shanghai, Xi said China welcomes more high-quality products from India, calling on the two countries to expand two-way trade and investment and create new growth points for cooperation in productivity, medicine, information technology, infrastructure and other fields.

Xi called for joint efforts from the two countries to uphold multilateralism, safeguard the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core, jointly safeguard the legitimate development rights, interests and space of developing countries, and promote steady and sustained cooperation among BRICS nations.

The year of 2020 will mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of China-India diplomatic ties. During their meeting, Xi told Modi that he wished that the bilateral relations could achieve further development and welcomed Modi to come to China next year.

For his part, Modi congratulated Xi on China's successful hosting of the CIIE, expressing his willingness to continue to expand bilateral trade and investment with China, and strengthen cooperation in energy and other fields.

The Indian prime minister stressed that he is looking forward to keeping close contact with Xi and properly managing differences, so that bilateral ties can be more fruitful and reach a new height.
