Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang on Monday stressed Beijing's firm determination to safeguard national sovereignty and end the violence in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), hours after the result of the city's 2019 district council election was announced

"Stopping the violence to restore order is currently the most urgent task for Hong Kong," Geng stressed, reiterating Beijing's unwavering support for Chief Executive Carrie Lam in leading the SAR government, the Hong Kong police in strictly enforcing the law, and Hong Kong's judiciary in punishing violent crimes.

"Hong Kong is China's Hong Kong, Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs. No foreign government, organization or individual has the right to interfere," he said.

"China's firm determination to safeguard its sovereignty, security and development interests, to implement the 'One Country, Two Systems' principle and to oppose external interference in Hong Kong affairs remains unchanged."
