Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed Monday that "any attempt to mess up Hong Kong, or even damage its prosperity and stability will not succeed".
Wang made the remarks while speaking to reporters after meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo.
He reiterated that Hong Kong is a part of China "no matter what happens", in reference to the district council elections over the weekend.
Counting is still under way in Hong Kong after a record number of voters headed to the polls on Sunday.
