The Hong Kong police has dispatched a security team to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) to clear the campus of dangerous articles and weapons left behind by the rioters, a police official told the media on Thursday morning.
The official said the police were entering the campus to clear the site of dangerous articles, handle hazardous materials and conduct on-site evidence collection.
Dangerous materials pose a threat to public safety and order, said the official, adding that the police will help the PolyU staff in handling chemical hazard items.
The official said searching for remaining protesters was not their main mission on Thursday. A protester found on site will not be arrested, but treated like a minor, he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, a PolyU official confirmed the campus had been cleared of all protesters. In addition, PolyU's executive vice president said work was being done to re-open the school as soon as possible.
