China urged the U.S. side to understand the situation clearly, remedy mistakes, immediately stop slandering China and cease interfering in China's internal affairs, Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi said during a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday.

Yang made the comments in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's signing the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 into law and U.S. House's approval of a bill targeting China's far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

U.S. officials have repeatedly made statements that distort and attack China's political system and domestic and foreign policies, which constitute gross interference in China's internal affairs, stressed Yang.

He said it is not only a grave violation of international law and basic norms governing international relations but also seriously violates the will of the Chinese and U.S. peoples as well as the international community.

Yang pointed out that China has made remarkable achievements since its founding seven decades ago. He said what is fundamental is that under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people have found a development path that suits their needs.

The Chinese people have confidence in their chosen path, theory, system and culture. They will steadfastly follow this path, Yang said, adding that China will unswervingly defend the nation's sovereignty, security and development interests.
