The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) should deepen public administration reform, improve government efficiency and promote modernization of the city's system and capacity for governance, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in Macao on Friday. 

Xi made the remarks at a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to China and inauguration of the fifth-term government of the Macao SAR. 

He stressed that the rule of law is a fundamental principle for the governance of Macao. 

Xi also called for efforts to build Macao into a smart city and use big data and other information technology to innovate the modes of government management and social governance in the SAR.
