Carrie Lam, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), visited Tuesday the headquarters of Hong Kong police to wish officers a happy New Year, local media reported.

Lam said in the past months, the police force has maintained law and order in Hong Kong despite being under great pressure from protesters.

She encouraged everyone to work together in the future to "sweep away the days of blood, sweat and tears."

In her New Year's Eve video message, Lam said she will "listen humbly to find a way out" of the unrest that has plagued the city for more than six months.

"As the chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, I will not shy away from my responsibility. I will listen humbly to find a way out," she said.

"In doing so, we will uphold the principle of 'One Country, Two Systems' and safeguard the rule of law," she stressed.
