Third seed Wang Qiang of China suffered a stunning loss to 19-year-old Swiss qualifier Leonie Kung on Friday during the ongoing Thailand Open.

The Swiss new star, who took the No. 283 spot in the world ranking, defeated Wang 7-5, 4-6, and 6-4, as the current Chinese No.1 only showed her dominance in the second set during the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) event in Hua Hin.

Wang was not the only person who felt the pressure in the women's singles quarter-finals, her compatriots Zheng Saisai and Wang Xiyu also crashed out, losing to Petra Martic of Croatia and Magda Linette of Poland respectively.

Recently, Wang and two-time Grand Slam champion Li Na donated three million yuan (430,000 U.S. dollars) to fight the novel coronavirus epidemic in China.

Furthermore, top seed and world No. 4 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine was knocked out by Nao Hibino of Japan 6-2, 6-4.

"It was very hard conditions to play and to be fair she played a great match, she went for it on important points and got rewarded for it," Svitolina said after the match.

In contrast, Hibino, who had never previously beaten a top five player, said she was "so happy to win the match," especially when her opponent is one of the top players in the world.

"I've been watching her (Svitolina) on TV so many times so I'm so happy. I love playing in Thailand so I want to stay as long as possible."
