COVID-19 pandemic: World leaders at risk as confirmed cases surpass 125,000

The COVID-19 outbreak was first reported in the city of Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province, in December 2019. Experts have attributed the outbreak to a novel coronavirus that has since spread across China and abroad with confirmed cases exceeding 125,000 globally.

Here is what we know so far:

In China: 81,003 confirmed cases; 3,180 deaths (including 3 in Hong Kong and 1 in Taiwan); 64,219 recovered

Outside of China: Over 48,000 confirmed cases; over 1,910 deaths

United Nations' New York headquarters confirms first coronavirus case.

Iran's total number of cases has surpassed 11,000 with 514 deaths.

Italy has expanded a lockdown to the whole country, with all public gatherings canceled. It is the worst-hit country in Europe.

English football suspends games, including the Premier League, until April 4 because of coronavirus outbreak; Champions League, Europa League games also postponed by UEFA.

Markets continue to dive. Trading in the U.S. was briefly halted for the second time this week after stocks plummeted on Thursday.
