The mother is the central figure of the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey family. She takes the major role of bringing up the baby monkey while the father often takes a hands-off stand. When the mother moves around or finds food, the baby clings to her belly by her fur.

Although the baby monkey can be naughty and troublesome sometimes, the mother still loves her baby deeply. Grieving mothers have been known to carry the corpse of their baby for a few days after it dies.
