Hong Kong cannot afford to tolerate any more "chaos" that has disturbed the city over the past 12 months, said the special administrative region (SAR)'s Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Tuesday.

"Everybody has to learn a lesson. Hong Kong cannot stand by such chaos. The residents of Hong Kong want a peaceful and stable environment. In light of the global economic recession due to the pandemic, more than ever we need a stable environment in order to restore people's normal lives," Carrie said during her weekly press conference.

Although the city has been hit hard by the pandemic, Lam said Hong Kong is still an economic hub, and the SAR government will roll out various measures to create jobs. The government also plans to allocate money to residents over the age of 18. Each person will receive 10,000 Hong Kong dollars (1,300 U.S. dollars) as early as July 8.

Lam also announced that the salaries of all political appointees will be frozen for a year starting in July. Non-official members of the Executive Council will also have their salaries frozen for a year starting in October.

Lam said the Hong Kong SAR government has received around 148,000 applications for its "Employment Support Scheme." Over 20,000 of them have been processed. These employers will start receiving funding as early as this Friday, which is a week ahead of the schedule previously announced by Lam.

Hong Kong on Tuesday marks a year since the protests erupted and protesters assembled in shopping malls to mark the anniversary.
