Hong Kong police on Tuesday said in a statement they will resolutely enforce the Law of the People's Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

"In response to the various criminal acts that endanger national security, the Hong Kong police force will conduct arrests and take other law enforcement actions in accordance with the national security law and the Laws of Hong Kong to protect the life and property of Hong Kong citizens and the basic rights and freedoms they enjoy under the law," police said.

"The HKSAR is an inalienable part of the People's Republic of China, and the Hong Kong police force is fully responsible for safeguarding the security of Hong Kong as well as our country," police added.

The law of the People's Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region took effect at 23:00 local time on Tuesday

The law was passed at the 20th session of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress, China's top legislature.
