15. Brighton

On 33 points, nine away from the mathematically safe Newcastle and six from relegation, Brighton and Hove Albion F.C. are in a no man's land of quality; their wins are rare (seven out of 32 played in the league), but when they arrive, they're major. Only two are over teams below them, and the others are against teams comprehensively better: 3-0 over Tottenham last year and a double of 2-1s against Arsenal. Yet, instead of suggesting Graham Potter's men have the potential to excel, it simply gives these larger teams a crisis of confidence. Their top scorer, Neal Maupay, only has nine goals all season, and the side didn't win a game in 2020 until the restart - and they followed that up with a draw and a 3-0 flattening from Manchester United.

There are upcoming points available from Norwich and Newcastle, but the back-to-back home games against Liverpool and Manchester City almost guarantee they aren't heading upwards; based on the badness of the teams below, they may not need too.

16. West Ham United

On 32 points, West Ham's English Premier League (EPL) survival is touch and go, and that is perhaps deserved. After winning only five games in 2019, manager Manuel Pellegrini was replaced by former Everton and Manchester United gaffer David Moyes who, upon appointment, said, "I think there are only two or three managers with a better Premier League win record. That's what I do, I win. I'm here to get West Ham wins and get them away from the bottom three."

That kind of hubris from a man with a reputation like Moyes is a recipe for disaster, and in 2020, West Ham have won only three games and lost eight. Their most recent win, an upset against Chelsea, shows they can stay up, especially when Manchester United is the only one of the last six with anything to play for.

17. Watford

Being one point ahead of the drop zone with six games remaining is a perfect summation of Watford's season, which has been a breathless scramble to nowhere since the very beginning. It took 11 games and three managers before their first win - which came over dead-last Norwich - and it's been slim pickings since. An unbeaten run over the Christmas and New Year period of four wins and two losses flatter to deceive, and it's still unknown how they won 3-0 against Liverpool on Leap Day 2020.

The memory of that game lingers, and there's a chance they can do it again against Manchester City or Arsenal at the very end of their season if those bigger sides get complacent, but besides for a home game against Norwich, Watford will have to knuckle down and squeeze draws out wherever they can.

18. Aston Villa

Aston Villa haven't won since January and, even more startling, have scored only 11 times this year. Paucity upfront and leakiness at the back - Manchester City effortlessly put six beyond them at the start of the year - suggests that the Claret are a side in dire need of rebuilding. A letter given to the EPL management earlier this month showing they're releasing 14 players from their active roster makes it clear they plan to spend a year doing so in the Championship rather than aim for survival.

19. Bournemouth

As it stands, Eddie Howe's A.F.C. Bournemouth are headed for the EFL Championship, and the margin between them and safety is currently a single point, but closing that tiny gap looks like it will be too much of a struggle. The Vitality Stadium has never been considered much of a fortress, but with a record of three wins, a draw and a staggering 12 losses away, there is something about this team that doesn't travel; the home record of four, five and seven respectively it is at least balanced, if not much better, and yesterday's 4-1 loss to Newcastle is not a positive sign.

Defender Nathan Ake has already had feelers sent towards him by larger clubs, so it's assumed that he will be gone by the end of the season, regardless of if the Cherries stay up or go down - the latter of which is likely based on their recent run of poor form and mostly top table opposition.

20. Norwich City

There is no escape for the Canaries. They've been in the relegation zone since October 2019 and haven't had anything that could be called a run, patch, or even spell of good form. Of their five wins, the closest came two losses apart, in which they shipped five goals. The most positive aspect of the team, past, present, and future is in the form of Finnish international Teemu Pukki who was the first Player of the Month for the EPL this season and the team's record goalscorer with 11 as of right now - and to put that into perspective, they have only scored 25 this year overall.

On 21 points, they have nothing to play for, not even pride - clear in the 4-0 steamrolling from Arsenal on July 2. It's an unfair comparison as there are four more teams and therefore eight more games in the Championship but to compare their stats, across 31 games, Norwich have 25 for and 56 against; Championship winners Leeds United scored 60 and allowed only 33 in 40 contests. When they get sent down, there is a slim chance Norwich will bounce back without major improvements throughout.
