Listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, the Chinese merganser is gradually returning from the brink of extinction. And Changbai Mountain has become a harbor for the tree-dwelling migratory duck.

The Chinese merganser is under first-class state protection in China. The adult male duck has a black head and neck while the female has a brownish-yellow color. The birds arrive at Changbai Mountain to mate and breed in spring, and then migrate south for wintering.

Changbai Mountain in northeast China is the major mountain range in Northeast Asia. Volcano, glacier, and primitive forest have provided an ideal harbor for countless flora and fauna. To better protect wildlife, Changbai Mountain Nature Conservation Management Center has settled many infrared cameras in the mountains, and from its footage, we can learn more about the secret life of species living there in the Journal of Changbai Mountain Species.
